A group of 12 school students from humanitarian group Green Globe initiated an anti-drug awareness campaign at Al Shoba, Dubai Investment Park labour accommodation on Thursday evening.
The students made video presentations and speeches against the use of alcohol and tobacco products, followed by an oath taking by the participants to abstain from the usage of these harmful substances.
As part of the Christmas and New Year celebrations, Green Globe distributed sports equipment, including footballs, cricket bats, volleyball and carom boards, to 550 labourers. "Taking up sports would help relive work stress and engage them in a healthy activity in their free time. I feel each one of us has a responsibility towards our planet. Every year, around 4,80,000 people die early because of tobacco use," said 17-year-old Humaid Habeeb, student of Our Own English High School, Sharjah, and founder of Green Globe.
"We hope to make an important contribution to reducing the toll of preventable death, disease and disability resulting from tobacco use," he added.
The environmental and humanitarian youth group stands for many causes and aims to give back to the society through their campaigns. Green Globe has conducted over 10 awareness campaigns this year all across the UAE.
Harith Mohamed, a six-year-old was the youngest member of the group participated in the campaign.
