While pointing out that the number of crimes registered a negligible increase in 2006, the report states that 88 per cent of the crime took place in Sharjah city as it is a commercial area.

According to the report, while 50 per cent of those who committed the crimes were of Asian nationalities, 15.2 per cent of them were nationals.

Further, 2,014 crimes for every 100,000 population was reported, out of which 1,244 were financial crimes, 378 assaults, and only one narcotics-related crime.

The total number of people imprisoned in 2006 was 22,818, of which 22.2 per cent were women and 0.8 per cent were juveniles.

The number of people who fell victim to crimes, according to the report, was 11,391, of which 79.8 per cent were victims of financial crimes and 20.2 per cent were assault victims.

Commenting on the report, Brig. Al Mutawa said the negligible increase crimes during 2006 was due to rise in population, expansion in commercial and business areas as well as rapid development of real estate and construction sector in the emirate.

He attributed the increase of financial crimes such as thefts, robberies and pickpocketing to the high cost of living in the country.
