Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday accepted the resignation of Federal Minister for Climate Change Senator Mushahidullah Khan, according to a statement issued by the PM Office.
Mushahidullah met the premier and explained his position with regards to his earlier BBC interview alleging that the former chief of Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) was conspiring to overthrow the government and topple army chief Gen. Raheel Sharif during Imran Khan's dharna (sit-in) last year.
In his interview, Mushahidullah claimed that during premier Sharif's meeting with Gen. Raheel on July 28, 2014, an audio tape was played in which Lt-Gen Zaheerul Islam could be heard giving orders for ransacking of the PM House and spread chaos.
The tape, claimed the federal minister, was obtained by officials of the civilian intelligence agency - Intelligence Bureau.
Though Mushahid's claim was denied both by the PM Office and army spokesman, the matter refuses to die down. On Monday a lawyer moved the Supreme Court to take up the matter. The petitioner Tariq submitted that similar statements were earlier made by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Planning Adviser Zubair Umar. These have created serious apprehensions of reemergence of tensions in civil-military relations.
