Three teenaged boys from Delhi were caught for stealing 12 motorbikes which they used for joyrides and to boast among classmates. The three students, all aged between 14 and 16 years, had been stealing scooters and motorcycles parked in the city's Paharganj and Daryaganj areas for weeks.
According to reports in TOI, the trio would unlock two-wheelers to ride them around the city and dump them when they ran out of fuel. With the surge in two-wheeler thefts, police were on the lookout for the culprits and picked one of the boys on Monday. The boy was questioned by cops after which he revealed the names of his accomplices.
According to police, the stealing spree started when one of the boys was able to unlock a two-wheeler parked near his school, using the key of his father's scooter. "They became confident they could unlock any two-wheeler with the keys. This encouraged them to go on a stealing spree. Every day after school, they would unlock two-wheelers and go on a ride. They returned home on Delhi Metro," said a police officer.
The trio also bragged about what they were doing and clicked photographs posing with the stolen vehicles. "We are preparing a social background report of the children as per norm. We will submit it to the authorities concerned. We will also counsel other children from their school so they do not think of emulating the antics of the trio," Mandeep Singh Randhawa, DCP (Central), said.
The children were reported to a Juvenile Justice Board and then handed over to their parents. In total, the three students have admitted to stealing at least two dozen bikes, some of which are yet to be traced by police.
