Reduce diagnostic pain: Kalam
AJMAN — Former Indian president APJ Abdul Kalam called for a change in attitude and perspective towards preventive and rural medicine while addressing a gathering at the Gulf Medical University (GMU) in Ajman on Tuesday.
He was addressing the medical students after inaugurating an e-learning portal at the Information and Learning Centre at GMU. The new facility at GMU will offer online courses for students and working professionals using a dedicated course management system.
Dr Kalam authored an oath during his address, where he advised the students to remove ‘diagnostic pain’ faced by patients.
“Patients are faced with diagnostic pain when they visit a medical centre with health related problems. Doctors often advice many medical tests which add to the misery of being cured. As future doctors, you should reduce the diagnostic pain,” Dr Kalam said.
Dr Kalam said that there was the need to improve primary healthcare facilities in India while building the education infrastructure to share knowledge between healthcare professionals.
“There are thousands of primary healthcare centres in Indian villages. Our mission should be to activate these centres to meet the medical needs of the people in those areas. Cervical cancer, malaria, HIV, cardiac complications and water-borne diseases are some of the prime areas of concern,” noted Dr Kalam in his address to the students.
“The world has witnessed phenomenal progress in medical sciences and treatment, but, there are still many areas which need to be explored,” said Dr Kalam. He added that there is an immediate need to bring down the costs of medicines while providing healthcare professionals with a forum to exchange case studies and share expertise, which will help save lives on time.
Meanwhile, His Highness Shaikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman received at the emiri court Dr Kalam and his delegation in the presence of the Ajman Crown Prince, Shaikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi.
Shaikh Humaid welcomed the delegation, stressing the depth of relations between the two countries in all fields. They discussed a number of issues in the areas of education, health, investment, trade and economy.
Dr Kalam lauded the progress being experienced by the UAE in general and Ajman in particular.
