He said due to the highly priced special food items consumed heavily during the holy month, a large segment of people have decided not to waste food in large quantities.

He said with the onset of Ramadan, the section has prepared a special plan to avoid the accumulation of waste food dumped by residents in various areas of the emirate. During Ramadan last year, the workers of the section emptied the garbage thrice a day, while this year containers are being emptied since the beginning of Ramadan only twice a day to avoid the piling up of waste food that can attract a lot of flies, insects and rodents which spread diseases.

Yousif added that the waste section is very keen to control the waste food during the holy month, as its accumulation in the container for a period of time causes bad stench that can disturb the residents of the area and also threaten the public health.

He pointed out that littering in Ajman has also been reduced by 70 per cent during the holy month, according to the report of the cleaning section of the municipality, but he attributed these achievements to the experienced and qualified inspectors and supervisors of the municipality and to their hard work in maintaining cleanliness and ensuring strict implementation of the cleaning and landscaping regulations.

Yousif said that many of the housemaids dump the waste outside the garbage containers thereby exposing it to stray dogs and cats, which spread it.

Hence supervisors and workers of the section are working 24 hours in three shifts to maintain cleanliness in the emirate by ensuring that waste remains in such containers.

He stressed that the section is also working hard to maintain cleanliness in the emirate by emptying garbage bins located in various areas of the corniche and the main roads of the city. Preparations are also under way to protect plants, lawn and cleanliness of the city.

“The municipality will impose fines on those who litter food waste or garbage in the emirate.”

He said that the municipality is putting in a great deal of effort to spread awareness in society about keeping the city clean and green as well as the importance of maintaining a healthy environment free from insects and rodents.
