Exotic animals were on display during the opening day of the first Dubai International Animal Feed/Pet Food Safety Conference held on Monday.
However, it was a snake that stole the show, making it an instant favourite of the crowd for selfies at the event, which also saw dogs and ducks among other animals.
"There is surveillance and certain rules regarding the import of some snakes, but people can own harmless snakes as pets," said Dr Hashem Al Awadhi, Head of Veterinarian Services at Dubai Municipality.
However, Al Awadhi warned against the fear that snakes might give to neighbours and surroundings. He stressed that the ownership of exotic animals is strictly prohibited in the country, noting that pets such as cats, dogs and birds are the only type of animals permitted for ownership.
The conference, organised by Dubai Municipality, aims to adopt new technologies that would help the sustainability of animal production and food safety. Al Awadhi said there has been a noticeable growth in pet food trade, which prompted the civic body to utilise amount of resources available locally.
Upon importing pet food from a number of countries around the world, the municipality inspects the goods to make sure it is clear from harmful chemicals before releasing it to the market.
Commenting on the latest incident where a cat was found with its tail and ears cut off, Al Awadhi said: "We have laws that protect animals, and people who commit such terrible acts are subject to penalty by law. Animal cruelty is forbidden in Islam."
He noted that residents should ensure their pets are regularly vaccinated and registered. Aleef App provides all details needed for pet owners, he said.
