Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday chaired a top level meeting in Karachi amid Sindh government's reluctance to extend powers of the Rangers in the city which expired midnight on Saturday.
The prime minister did not categorically mention the extension issue but made it clear that "there will be no compromise on the law and order situation of Karachi." The meeting was attended by chief minister Sindh, army chief, corps commander and director general Rangers, interior minister and senior civil and military leaders.
"The Karachi operation should have been initiated eight years ago," he said, adding that the decision to undertake the operation was made with consensus among all stake holders.
Media reports said the decision to extend the operation has been taken by the Sindh chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah who is expected to convey it to the federal government soon. Reiterating that the objectives of the operation have been very clear , he cautioned that all concerned must keep in view that the remarkable improvement in law and order situation in Karachi may not wasted to drive the city back to the past deterioration.
Earlier, interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan regretted that the Sindh government had not notified extension in Rangers' power.
"They should have done it by Saturday," he had said, insisting that Rangers could not be left in the province without legal cover and would be pulled out if no extension was given. The decision, he noted, ultimately lay with the provincial government.
The prime minister regretted that due to weak prosecution, those arrested for involvement in heinous crimes.
Meanwhile, Sindh police chief reportedly disclosed at the meeting that terrorists involved in the killing of two military traffic policemen have been arrested. - news@khaleejtimes.com
