This follows an increase in demand for the service, the corporation told Khaleej Times on Thursday.

Dubai Taxi operates a fleet of 3,504 vehicles and senior officials expect a rise in passengers in the course of the year. The cab service, which has already carried 15,376,926 people this quarter, is focusing on specific segments of the population like women and people with special needs.

“We have 22 vehicles (for women) with 48 drivers, and our plan is to increase it to 50 vehicles. When we have the required numbers of women cabs in service, we will recruit around 68 women drivers,” said Yousef Al Ali, Director of Fleet Operations Department.

The operator is also considering modifying some vehicles in its fleet to suit the needs of the disabled.

Al Ali said: “No new vehicle has been added to the fleet, but we are making some of our cabs more suitable for special needs people.” This is in line with the community initiatives of the RTA, which is to appeal to a larger section of the populace in the emirate.

Sharjah and Ajman had hiked their cab fares in February and March. But passengers in Dubai can breathe easy as the operator has no plans for a fare hike in the middle of a downturn. This was confirmed by Mansoor Rahma Al Falasi, Director of Franchising and Enforcement Department of the RTA Public Transport Agency.

But those travelling between Dubai and Sharjah will be disappointed as there is no move to review the flag-down rate of Dh20 for going to the northern emirate, according to Al Falasi.

He clarified the metro and bus operations and taxi services of the RTA were not inter-linked and were based on demand. ‘‘Taxis are not distributed among stations as the taxi business is different. It is distributed through the RTA’s Dispatch Centre or following commuters’ requests on roads. “Taxis are transport for the public and not public transport.” news@khaleejtimes.com
