The MoH had recently set up a National Pharmacovigilance Committee which has now approved a national action plan and strategy for creating a mechanism for pharmacovigilance and drug control.
“The panel has given its green light for the blueprint of the establishment of the centre,” said Dr Amin Al Amiri, Head of the National Pharmacovigilance Committee, adding that the centre would be set up in the MoH building in Dubai.
“Through the establishment of this centre, we are centralising the drug and poisons reporting system,” he said.
Currently, a communications system between different health authorities including MoH, Dubai Health Authority, Health Authority of Abu Dhabi (HAAD) is already in place to report complications related to medicines, locally and globally.
“A central registry also exists at the MoH to receive any reports about drugs-related risks and complications. However, this centre will be the central reporting authority in the country,” he added.
Meanwhile, the pharmacovigilance committee has been tasked with improving safety of pharmaceutical products, monitoring side effects of use of medicine, providing technical and pharmaceutical consultation and information, coordinating and pooling energies of competent circles.
It will also create a pharmacovigilance data base, tailoring a strategy for training programmes and boosting cooperation with specialised local, regional and international organisations.
Dr Al Amiri said that once established, the centre would communicate with the World Health Organisation on the international level.
“Locally, we will also be able to announce for example; alerts to and from hospitals, adverse drug reactions and even give and receive feedback from patients,” he added.
He said that the committee had approached the WHO to upgrade the local registry and pharmacovigilance programmes so as to achieve the highest international standards on drugs and quality assurance. ‘’All government and private hospitals and health centres under the ministry and health authorities will be involved in the awareness programmes on pharmacovigilance,’’ he explained.
