The establishment of the centre becomes significant as there is a need to ensure safety, efficacy and quality in medicines in the context of a rapidly expanding private healthcare sector in the country.

The national centre will also help the UAE to be part of the Uppasala Monitoring Centre (UMC) of the World Health Organisation. Responsible for the WHO programme for International Drug Monitoring, the UMC includes the WHO’s “global intelligence network for benefits and risks in medicinal products.” Public and private healthcare institutions in the country will be able to report adverse drug reactions to the national centre which will monitor any increase in the frequency of known complications related to drugs, said Director of Registration and Drug Control Department Dr Fatima Al Braiki.

She said adverse reactions due to complementary and alternative medicines can also be reported to the centre.

“The pharmacovigilance system will help in identifying the risk factor and possible mechanisms underlying adverse drug reactions. It will harmonise the collection and exchange of safety, efficacy and quality data and help in educating and informing patients and practitioners.”

She noted that the systematic application of management policies, procedures and practices for analysing, evaluating and controlling risk factors associated with drugs need a multi-disciplinary approach from both the government and private health sectors.

Once the system is in place, there will be easy access to lists of approved, rejected, or suspended medicines and manufacture, she added.
