Abu Dhabi — A special committee at the Federal Authority for Land and Maritime Transport has held its first meeting to follow up the implementation of a mandatory unified guide for traffic control devices across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The guide was approved by a GCC ministerial transport and communications committee on October 15 last year.
The guide specifies the standards by which all traffic signs, road surface markings and signals are to be designed, installed and used in all the GCC countries. The aim is to reduce accidents due to the differences between traffic rules in the GCC countries and to cut costs of preparing different guides.
At the meeting, the committee members, who represent relevant federal and local traffic departments, discussed an action plan to enforce the guidelines in all the emirates of the UAE and develop a mechanism to prepare reports and provide feedback on the process.
The meeting was chaired by Abdullah Al Kathiri, Executive Director of Land Transport, on directives from Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed Balhaif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Public Works and Chairman of the Federal Authority for Land and Maritime Transport. — Wam
