Robert Dorman, the owner of a general trading company in Dubai with a branch office in Ajman, had imported as many as 23 container loads of mixed plastic waste. Following an initial Ajman police alert, he was stopped at the Dubai International Airport last week while trying to leave the country and handed over to Ajman police investigators, who suspected he had illegally imported hazardous waste into the emirate. However, Dorman’s release was ordered by the Ajman Public Prosecution authorities after he gave an undertaking that he would forward the 23 containers of plastic waste to another country. Colonel Abdullah Al Wan, Director-General of Ajman Police, said the Ajman Public Prosecution’s decision followed this categorical assurance from Dorman to take the containers out of the country. Ajman Municipality sources, while refusing to comment on the details of the case or Dorman’s release, said his release was ordered only after Dorman gave written assurance that all the containers would be sent out of the country soon.
