A new ATM scam message is making the rounds in UAE. The new scam joins a couple other methods that scamsters have devised in order to prey on unsuspecting residents.
A KT journalist received a copy of this message and you can see the actual message below. In it, the sender claims that the recipients' ATM account has been suspended because of a new UAE government policy. The recipient is then requested to call a local number in order to seemingly reactivate their account.
The message itself is dubious as the punctuation is off - a dead giveaway. The message also begins with an incomplete sentence, which should raise eyebrows. Another element of the message that is worth questioning is that it came from an international number. It was also sent using some sort of software as evidenced by the last part of the message which reads "Sent via Lantech Soft".
Residents are urged to only respond to messages that come directly from their banks. Banks rarely ever use actual mobile numbers to communicate with their customers. Banks in the UAE always send messages by a registered name which clearly mentions the name of the bank. International banks may also send messages using registered names or a 4-digit number.
The Dubai Police have repeatedly urged residents to report and bring any new scam to their attention.
