As part of the UAE's Year of Giving initiatives, the Ras Al Khaimah Police have launched an initiative to help the inmates, who are languishing in jails in financial cases.
The initiative, named 'Giving Basket', targets to contribute Dh400,000 to settle the debts of some of the inmates. The beneficiaries will be selected after studying the cases of defaulted inmates.
"The move is in line with the 'Year of Giving' initiative, announced by the President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan," said Major-General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of the RAK Police.
"The initiative will be conducted in collaboration with two philanthropic businessmen in Ras Al Khaimah, who have agreed to donate Dh200,000 each for this noble cause."
The kind gesture, to be followed by other initiatives, will ease the suffering of defaulted inmates, and will bring happiness to their family, he added.
"Emirati businessmen Fahid Al Sherawi and Saeed Al Abedi have decided to be part of this initiative to settle the financial difficulties of some inmates in a positive response to the 'Year of Giving' initiative."
A special committee, comprising some RAK officers and dignitaries of the local community, has been formed to study the cases of all inmates and find adequate solutions to them."
The inmates, who have shown good performance in terms of memorisation of the Holy Quran, have also been supported and rewarded as part of the RAK Holy Quran Award, 17th edition.
"Up to 56 male and female inmates have performed well in three categories of the annual local competition which is meant to help the RAK prisoners start a new chapter of their life and be good citizens," said Ahmed Subaian, secretary-general of the award.
"The competition this year has reached out to the inmates of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain prisons," he added.
