Seven Emirati engineers have joined the UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR). This is the second group of engineers joining FANR, with the first batch coming on board in January this year.
The engineers, who have graduated from local universities, will start a year-long nuclear regulatory development programme, and be taught the fundamentals in order to understand the technical concepts applicable to nuclear engineering and regulation.
FANR director-general Christer Viktorsson said the authority aims to build long-term sustainability by developing Emirati talent in the nuclear sector. "We are pleased to continue this successful training programme and to welcome young Emiratis who will contribute substantively to the UAE's energy future. The development of qualified Emiratis is one of our top priorities as it is vital for the sustainability of the nuclear sector," Viktorsson said.
Safety, security, safeguards
The first-of-its-kind programme is based on a modular approach with a mix of both technical and soft skills development and consists of 10 modules. It starts with a two-week FANR orientation programme and an introductory course in nuclear engineering.
The second part of the programme consists of 13-week nuclear fundamentals course at Khalifa University and focusses on the '3S' nuclear principle - Safety, Security and Safeguards.
FANR now has a core of 43 Emirati engineers and health physicists who represent its commitment to overseeing peaceful, safe and secure nuclear activities in the UAE.
