The move follows the instruction of Shaikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Department of Municipality and Planning, during his meeting with Khalid Al Houseni, Head of the Health section of the municipality, yesterday.

Shaikh Rashid stressed the importance of protecting consumers in the emirate through implementation of rules, regulations and specifications.

He said inspectors should also focus on methods of food storage and its transportation.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Al Houseni said under the municipality’s safety regulations, the food companies must store the items in hygienic places, away from dust, stench and all sorts of pollution.

The workers at warehouses dealing with food items should hold valid fitness certificates, he said.

The intensified campaign is aimed at ensuring that the food items are being stored in a proper manner and that warehouses and other storage areas are fit for such a purpose.

The team will comprise inspectors of the Health section and Trade Licence Department of the municipality.

“The violators will face hefty fines and even closure if the violation is serious,” said Al Houseni.
