Expats form 88% of population
ABU DHABI - Government surveys show the country continues to depend on foreign workforce, leaving a huge imbalance in the demographic structure.
According to the latest figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the economic growth, infrastructure development and construction boom have reduced the UAE indigenous population to a mere 11.5 per cent.
Over 88 per cent of the 8,264,070 population of the UAE, according to the NBS, is expatriate community. The number of expatriate community from across the world, with the majority coming from South Asian countries, is 7,316,073 (88.5 per cent), while the UAE nationals are 947,997 (11.5 per cent).
The total number of males in the country (both expats and nationals) is 6,161,820, while females account for 2,102,250.
Similarly, the number of expat males is 5,682,711 while that of females is 1,633,362, showing a greater number of workforce is single engaged in the country’s infrastructure and construction industry.
The number of UAE national males is 479,109 and females 468,888, showing a close parity in gender balance.
The figures also refer to UAE nationals in each emirate. Abu Dhabi leads with 404,546, followed by Dubai (168,029), Sharjah (153,365), Ras Al Khaimah (97,529), Fujairah (64,860), Ajman (42,186) and UAQ (17,482).
