Tens of thousands of Christian expatriates attended the special Christmas prayers and carol services in churches across the country on Thursday night, heralding the birth of Christ and celebrating the renewed hope of a new tomorrow.

Crowds were particularly huge in churches in Abu Dhabi city, Dubai and Sharjah.

The roads leading to the church areas in these emirates witnessed continuous flow of worshippers in vehicles and on foot.

The special mass in some Catholic and Orthodox churches went on past midnight.

Priests gave special sermons and messages and the worshippers, some of whom have been observing lent for the last 25 days, were treated to Christmas cakes at the end of the prayers. Some churches have scheduled their Christmas prayer services today.

Marking the end of the lent period, Christians would have special break fast this morning, with meat dishes and cakes, though they would miss the bursting of crackers, which is part of the celebrations back home.

Most of the families have arranged special lunch and dinner with relatives and friends. In fact, hotels have also lined up Christmas dinner offers and takeaway services, especially turkey preparations.
