Dohms plans online medical certificates

DUBAI - The Dubai Department of Health and Medical Services (Dohms) is studying plans to improve services offered to the general public by introducing an electronic application system for medical fitness certificates. It is also studying the possibility of having a direct electronic link with the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department to further streamline issuance of medical fitness certificates for visa renewal purposes.

Mohammed Hussain Mohammed, the Administrative Officer at the Medical Fitness Section of Maktoum Hospital, said that the measures being discussed come in line with plans to modernise work procedures, eliminate paper work and become fully electronic to offer faster services to members of the public.

He said that application for medical fitness certificate is very simple and all that is required is a valid health card, copy of the passport with visa page and three passport-sized pictures.

It takes five minutes to input the data into the computer, after which the medical tests are administered, which take normally 15 minutes.

They include blood test and chest x-ray. The applicant can return the next day to get his/her medical fitness certificate.

Mr Mohammed said that this process used to take four days at times but not now since the required laboratory equipment were procured and enough staff were hired and an electronic system has been put in place to streamline procedures and minimise waiting periods.

With the implementation of the new plan applicants can apply online through the Dohms web site for a medical test and will be given an appointment to come to the Primary Health Care clinic on a certain day at a certain hour for the test.

The Dohms also plans a link-up with the DNRD so that in future an applicant would follow up the results of his/her medical test at the DNRD rather than at the clinic, and proceed with residence visa procedures.

Mr Mohammed said that the number of visa applicants who visited the Medical Fitness Section in the first six months of this year came to 108,791.
