The Chevrolet car, which belongs to Tahreer Al Ameer, a journalist with an Arabic daily newspaper, was completely destroyed. The blaze, which is still being investigated, reduced his vehicle to a lump of scrap.

The fire broke out in the car which was parked along with 15 other vehicles in the first storey of the building at 4am.

The security and the watchman evacuated the building and called the Civil Defence, which arrived in 40 minutes. By then, the fire had completely destroyed the car.

The Civil Defence managed to put out the fire in 50 minutes and requested the tenants to go back to their apartments. The police and Civil Defence personnel suspect that the fire might have been started by someone who apparently targeted only the journalist's car. Or else, it might have simply been caused by an electric short circuit.

A Civil Defence source said the police have taken fingerprints and are investigating the incident.

Unfortunately, the parking lot in this building was not equipped with any fire-fighting equipment such as extinguishers or even a fire alarm system.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Al Ameer said: "At 4am the watchman knocked on my door to tell me to immediately evacuate the flat as there was an emergency. When I went down, I was shocked to see my car on fire. I had earlier in the evening gone out with my daughter and when we returned, I parked my car in my usual slot. The car was a brand-new 2006 model which I had bought six months ago. I'm sure the fire was not a result of any mechanical or electrical problem," she said hinting that it might have been a deliberate criminal act.

She said that her building has two security guards who sit at the main gate. But the parking lot is open from the other side through which any body can easily sneak in. The security guard, who started his shift at 4am, said he didn't observe anything unusual when he came on duty.

Al Ameer said she didn't suspect anyone in particular, adding "I have a comprehensive insurance for my car and I am now waiting for the police report to be released so that I can claim compensation."
