“They were all masked when they kidnapped me,” the Chinese man told the Dubai Criminal Court, saying that he did not have enemies or disputed with anyone in Dubai.
“I later knew that one of the kidnappers was working as a driver for me in Fujairah,” the young businessman who owned a shop at Dragon Mart said.
Neither could the victim’s wife or his cousin identify any of the detainees.
In their testimonies, both the wife and cousin told the court – through a Chinese interpreter - that they heard the screams of the victim who was being tortured with electric shocks when one of the kidnappers talked to them on the investor’s mobile.
“They first demanded two million without mentioning the currency, and then sought Dh20 million,” they said.
Meanwhile, the court, presided over by Judge Al Saeed Barguth, listened to two statements of police sources about the crime. They told the court that the victim was found tied and masked in the kidnappers’ apartment in the Al Naemiya area of Ajman.
However, the case was adjourned to January 19, 2010, so that two missing suspects will appear in court, and other witnesses shall give their testimonies.
The 10 kidnappers were referred by Dubai Public Prosecution to the court on charges of kidnapping, torturing and robbing the son of a rich businessman, who owns a toy factory in Beijing, outside his flat in International city at night, and held him for three days in Ajman to get a payoff. They also took the victim’s passport, wallet and cheque book.
Tipped off about the crime, Dubai Police initiated investigations on November 18 this year, set traps and raided several flats in Ajman and Fujairah and arrested the gang members who tried to stop the police with knives.
Khaleej Times earlier quoted Colonel Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, deputy director of Dubai Police’s Criminal Investigation Department as saying that such crimes are rare in the UAE. “Only three kidnapping cases were reported in Dubai during the past few years,” he said.
The defendants have not yet entered pleas.
