Showing respect to the public wish and to ensure social coherence, Madar Publishing and Distribution House has suspended a novel titled Sawalif Kanu (They were Just Stories), the publishers said in a Twitter post on Saturday.
The novel written by Mohammed Al Kindi faced harsh criticism from the public over its explicit content.
"To meet the public demand and due to the importance of the public opinion, it has been decided to suspend the book from distribution and publishing," Madar said on its Twitter page.
The publisher's action came a few days after the public took to Twitter in a campaign to express their concern and rejection on the content, saying they contradict the habits and tradition of the Emirati society. The novel, which was released recently, narrates a story about a poet, who got acquainted with a woman over phone. The relation continued for two months and he then discovered that the woman was his wife's friend. The book is written in an Emirati dialect and the writer said in some occasions the story resembled a real life story. However, he said the book is written in an Emirati dialect does not mean that story refers to Emiratis.
He expressed his apology to whoever found something in the book that does not suit the Emirati society.
