Like many expats, I relocated to Dubai last year after considering the move for over a year. My research on the city started three months before I arrived.
Reading articles over the internet and talking to a few bloggers, I made a perception about Dubai that was shattered within a few days of landing.
Apart from truly being a melting pot of different cultures, the city will make you feel at home with its warmth.
Here are my top observations:

Beyond the shiny buildings

Most pictures of Dubai online will have shiny skyscrapers occupying the skyline of the city. But there is definitely more to explore in the city if you have the inclination to. Keep the initial few days to move around the city. Make a visit to the creek area and bask in the old charm of Dubai with old restaurants, spice souk, gold souk, shisha places and don't forget the glorious deserts. Take the dhow or abra and let the city grow on you.

A call away

You literally don't have to step out of your house as everything is home delivered. And yes, I mean everything! Be it food, phone repairs, laundry, car wash, tailoring, beauty salon, you can call for any service and it will be delivered within no time.

Midnight walks

You might have heard about Dubai being safe and the perception stands true. You can take to the streets in the early hours of the morning or at midnight with nobody around and still feel safe. With tough laws and constant police patrolling, the crime rate remains low. The majority of female expats in the city love the city for its security.

How's the weather today?

Apart from being a polite conversation starter, the unpredictable weather can be discussed throughout the year. Before moving to Dubai I often wondered how hot can it get in Dubai? It's only after moving here I realised that stepping out even at 6 pm in July and August, with the temperature hitting 40 degrees, might be a bad idea as you will be soaked in sweat within minutes. It is best not to discuss the summer months here! Also, rain sends the whole city into panic mode with traffic clogging the roads. Winters are beautiful though and are the best time to set foot outdoors.

Hop on the metro

Taking a cab can be expensive. You can just hop on a Dubai metro or Dubai bus to reach your destination. The rail and bus network is extensive and it is dirt cheap to take one. Just buy a NOL card and you are set.

Friday brunches are a big deal

Friday brunches are an unsaid tradition in Dubai. After working through the week from Sunday to Thursday, the residents reserve the lazy Fridays for brunches. With unlimited options to choose from at discounted offers, your calendar is never empty. So, Fridays can be a fight between your much-needed sleep and Friday brunch!
