Welcoming the students and their parents, Dr Winfred Thompson, AUS Chancellor, pointed out that the development of the campus facilities, the assembly of an outstanding faculty and staff and the recruitment of such a promising student body are remarkable, almost umprecedented, achievements in such a short period of time. He also reassured parents that the faculty and staff would assist students in making a pleasant transition to university life. "We want the experiences that our students have to be enjoyable as well as educational," he said.
Ali Shuhaimy, AUS Dean of Admissions, noted that the week-long orientation programme is designed to make the new students' transition into the university life a smooth one. Safa Taryam, an AUS student, also welcomed the audience on behalf of the Student Council.
Students were also introduced to other university officials from the academic and administrative areas. Following the welcome session, students and parents attended open houses in the AUS College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Architecture and Design, Business Management and Engineering.
The orientation week will continue until Wednesday.
Meanwhile, new students will attend the academic orientation course today from 10am to 12pm in the main building. From 2pm to 45pm, students will attend sessions for their majors in the appropriate school or college. Other orientation week events will include student library tours, placement exams, course registration and an introduction to student activities. Tours of the campuses in Sharjah and Dubai are also scheduled.
