The university was informed of the decision after the MESA Board of Directors recently voted to admit the institution.

The AUS application for membership in MESA was prepared by former AUS Chancellor Dr Roderick French, who currently serves as Director of the AUS Washington D.C.

MESA is the principle organisation for scholars and educators from all over the world who are interested in the study of this region. Apart from many other scholarly activities, it also sponsors the International Journal of Middle East Studies, which is the premiere scholarly journal dealing with the region.

The annual conference of the organisation is the leading international forum for scholarship and intellectual exchange in this subject area. Participation in the activities of MESA will enable AUS faculty members and students to learn from and contribute to the international dialogue of scholarly Middle East Studies.

Some 60 colleges, universities and research centres hold institutional membership in MESA. Most of these institutions offer degree programmes in Middle East Studies.
