This was stated by Salem bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chief of the Sharjah Emirates Municipalities Council Bureau Board while addressing a Press conference on Tuesday.
He said the Beeiah was a limited liability joint stock company of the Sharjah Municipality, the JMS Property Development LLC and the Tactical Connections Canada.
The company has been established under the directives of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who is keen to develop the Emirate of Sharjah at par by following the highest civic norms of developed countries.
In this connection the municipality has set up Sharjah Environmental Company headed by Shaikh Khalid bin Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi. The Beeiah will be the first company of its kind not only in the UAE but in the whole Arab world to undertake waste recycling.
He said volume of sold waste in emirate had touched one million tonnes per capita per year. In this situation the Beeiah would scientifically classify and sort out domestic, industrial, agricultural, medical and electrical waste and help the government put an end to the problem.
He said a recycling factory would be set up in Al Sajjah area which would be equipped with the latest technology employed in the recycling industry and would have staff of highly experienced specialists and technicians. Later it would set up its branches in other municipalities of the emirate.
“His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan is nowadays sparing no effort to convert the Emirate of Sharjah into a pollution-free city and help the residents and visitors enjoy clean and healthy environment. The assignment of “Beeiahí” chairmanship to Shaikh Khalid bin Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, however, adds to our pride,” he added.
“Certainly, Beeiahi will be the practical solution for reducing waste production rate, particularly when its 55 to 65 per cent can be recycled,” Director General of Sharjah Municipality, Eng. Abdullah Al Ameri, said.
Randa Kamal, Chief Executive Officer of JMS Property Development stated that: “The “Beeiah” initiative is aimed at developing the environment for generation of present and future and ensuring continuous welfare to the society without putting extra stress on the environment.”
At the first stage, the “Beeiah” will collect, sort out and classify waste within the following categories: aluminium materials, plastic materials, paper, glass and ceramic, building materials, iron and organic materials. These will be sent to the recycling factory, which will be operational by late 2008 after its completion. The Beeiahí will also prepare awareness programmes and seminars on sorting out waste.
