The longest period of violation recorded in Fujairah is that of an Ethiopian woman, who was residing in the UAE illegally for six years.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Brig Dr Ahmed Ali Al Sagiri, acting executive director of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs - Fujairah, said the centre received many people who have violated the residency law, mostly one to four years.
"Most of the violators were domestic helps and workers absconding from their employers. Majority of the services on the first day was the clearance of the absconding circulars against them.
"The violators crowded in the centres three hours before the official timings. It confirms the greatness of the initiative - comprehensive benefits and opportunity to adjust their residency status or leave the country by the end of the grace period."
Brig Al Sagiri added the first day witnessed a heavy turnout of people of various nationalities. "Our automated line-up system helped facilitate the sorting of visitors in to three tents - one for women. The tents are equipped with all amenities to complete the amnesty transactions," he said
