The campaign's main objective is to make people aware of their role to contribute positively to the environment of the UAE.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Mohammed Yousif, Head of the Cleaning Section, said that the municipality's staff will join various other companies, government and private institutions, volunteers from schools and families for ‘Clean-up UAE’ Day to pick up tonnes of rubbish in various areas across the emirate.

He said the municipality is working hard to increase the number of clean-up participants in comparison with the previous year’s inaugural event. The emphasis placed through this activity is on the individual's responsibility in maintaining the environment neat and clean, he added.

According to the official, the Municipality has always been keen for its employees to develop an understanding of the need to conserve water, fuel and energy. As part of awareness building, all employees will take part in the campaign.

He said that cleaning sections in preparing publications, pamphlets and leaflets about the clean-up drive will be distributed in schools, companies, shopping centres and streets in order to attract a large number of people to participate in the campaign.

He pointed out that just as last year, the event will be inaugurated in Dubai with an official flag hoisting. The campaign covered simultaneous operations in the five emirates of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah as well as the cities of Al Ain and Al Silaa, he added.

"The campaign is aimed at heightening public awareness about individual’s responsibility towards the care and protection of our environment. If we make up our mind to preserve our environment, we can ensure the health, wealth and safety of our future generations. Just as the abuse of natural resources destroys the environmental heritage that we might leave to our descendants, every act in the defence of our environment results in long-term benefits that will accrue to future generations as well as to the present one," he said.
