The municipality, said Razaq, would assign a contracting company the responsibility of the two bridges during the course of the week. The two new bridges are part of an elaborate expansion project proposed for this critical thoroughfare.

Tenders had already been invited for the execution of the project and the municipality was in the process of reviewing clarifications sought by several contracting companies, he added.

The two bridges and other expansion work will together entail Dh80 million. The main objective of the entire exercise is to minimise traffic worries in the emirate and, thus, draw more investors.

The first phase of the project will begin with the Gulfa and Al Mirror roundabouts being replaced with bridges. The construction and expansion work along the road will unfold later. The project is scheduled to be completed in an year's time and one may expect the new upgraded facility to be thrown open to the public by August 2007.

He explained that removal of these two roundabouts will enhance the movement of traffic through Khalifa roads and open access to trucks and heavy vehicles which used to find it difficult to pass through such roundabouts.

The official pointed out that the municipality was working on several projects to enhance the quality of roads in the emirate. Roads interconnecting the industrial areas had been accorded priority since contracting companies were already working on the main road, which was slated to be completed by the end of the year, he added.

Razaq said the municipality had launched strategic programmes to develop areas across the emirate and was implementing projects to pave and expand roads with a view to addressing increasing traffic woes as also the problem of blinding dust swirls.
