Ace Footballer Detained
Over Witchcraft

DUBAI — Three footballers, including an ace striker in the UAE national squad, were taken in police custody last month on suspicion of involvement in ‘black magic’ and witchcraft, police sources told Khaleej Times on Saturday.

Two of them were released shortly after detention on September 29.

“Yes, (the ace striker) is in police custody,” said a top officer in the Criminal Investigation Department of Dubai Police on Saturday evening. He, however, declined to elaborate.

It’s widely believed that football clubs in several countries in the Middle East often seek assistance from those practising witchcraft in order to boost their winning chances.

UAE will take on Japan in a friendly match on Wednesday ahead of their World Cup qualifier against North Korea in Seoul on October 15.
