Unmanned aircraft designs, desalination membranes, wearable sensors and farming robots were among the innovation projects showcased by students from Khalifa University of Science and Technology.
Over 140 students from undergraduate engineering programmes presented the results of their year-long projects at the two-day exhibition held at the university's main campus in Abu Dhabi.
Freshmen engineering students presented 39 innovative engineering prototypes while 144 senior engineering students unveiled the results of their extensive senior design projects. The events highlight solutions to real world challenges and projects in various engineering disciplines.
Dr Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, executive vice-president, Khalifa University of Science and Technology, said: "The Term Project Presentation Day and Innovation Day demonstrate our students' creative solutions in design-stage concepts and prototypes and celebrate the students' hard work and achievements throughout the year.
"These projects reflect the university's research strength, our academic resources and faculty expertise, which keep us at the forefront of innovation. The twin events help us to showcase our overall capabilities to stakeholders while also maintaining our leading position, both regionally and internationally."
Addressing a wide range of real-world challenges, freshmen engineering students presented projects ranging from solar cookers, coin-based waste dispensers, heartbeat sensors, self-driving suitcases, and blind aid sticks.
The winning project from the Term Project Presentation was selected based on the technical and presentation aspects of the solution.
"I'm excited to be part of the innovation projects," Mohammed A., an engineering student told Khaleej Times. "The projects that involve real world challenges help promote our creativity and critical thinking abilities as we look forward to become serious innovators after school."
