Some 80 students participated in two diplomacy programmes run by the Ministry of Education (MoE) at Harvard University in Boston, US, this summer.
It was an opportunity that allowed the youth to join the educational simulation programmes of the Model United Nations (MUN), where they learnt more about diplomacy and leadership.
The students also got a boost in their communication, decision-making, problem-solving, debating and critical thinking skills, enabling them to discuss top-priority world issues with confidence and come up with innovative solutions for such issues. Dr Amna Al Dahak Al Shamsi, assistant undersecretary for the activities sector at the MoE, said: "The Diplomacy Ambassadors Programme is implemented within the framework of the ministry's keenness to prepare its students for the future and equip them with outstanding skills that would enable them to achieve excellence in serving their country."
During their MUN sessions where they role-played as UN delegates and simulated UN committees, the students learnt about relevant laws and how decisions are taken. They also participated in lectures that honed their skills in leadership, debates, public speaking and scientific research, and developed their knowledge on global issues.
Among the main topics that the students discussed at their MUN sessions were peace and security, human rights, humanitarian relief, international law and the Millennium Development Goals.
