A 76-year-old woman in Australia died of hemorrhage when a rooster pecked at her left leg repeatedly, striking a varicose vein.
According to the report published in the journal Forensic Science, Medicine and Pathology, the woman had been collecting eggs at her home when she was attacked by the rooster. The woman started to bleed profusely and collapsed, after which an autopsy revealed two small lacerations on her leg, including one on a large varicose vein. Doctors concluded that she died from "exsanguination" due to bleeding from a varicose vein, CBS17.com quoted LiveScience reports.
Terming the attack as "rare", the authors of the study told LiveScience it "demonstrates that even relatively small domestic animals may be able to inflict lethal injuries in individuals if there are specific vascular vulnerabilities present". Professor Roger Byard at the University of Adelaide in Adelaide, Australia, who co-authored the study with Judith Fronczek, said that this incident shows "how vulnerable the elderly are".
While varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins just under the skin, according to the National Institutes of Health. Most commonly found in the legs, varicose veins are often a cosmetic concern, but in some cases they can lead to more serious complications like ulcers, blood clots or bleeding, according to the MayoClinic.
