When 60-year-old Paula Stanton from New Jersey accidentally flushed her wedding ring in the toilet, she never expected to get it back again.
But nine years later, Stanton was both shocked to read a notice on her door from public works department informing her that they had found her ring. MSN quoted Stanton as saying in Press of Atlantic City, "Nobody could believe it. Everyone was in a state of shock. I was calling my kids and telling people about it. My family had a difficult year, and for this to happen..."
Stanton, who lives in Somers Point, was gifted a ring by her husband Michael for their 20th wedding anniversary. She told that while she was cleaning the toilet in 2009, she realised that she had flushed the ring accidentally.
"It had been a little big on my finger, because it was winter time and my hands were smaller. I felt so bad about it. Sad and embarrassed," MSN quoted Stanton as saying.
Although Stanton's husband gave her a new ring and joked that she should "hold on to it", she was hopeful to find it and also reached out to a team working on a sewer line near her home three years. "I told her really nicely that the chances of us finding it [are slim but] we'd keep an eye out for it," said Ted Gogol, 64, a part of the team Stanton had approached regarding her lost ring.
When the public works department team stumbled upon the ring while working on a manhole, Gogol immediately recalled Stanton having approached him about her lost ring. Also, Gogol knew Stanton's husband from volunteering and coaching in the community.
Gogol posted a notice on her door while the family was travelling for Thanksgiving and told her to reach out to the public works department. "I figured they had to work near our house and had to dig up the yard or something," said Stanton who was in tears when she finally reunited with her wedding ring just in time for her 38th wedding anniversary this December.
The ring was handed over to Stanton after boiling it in peroxide and lemon juice. "People say around this time of year crazy things happen. She said it was her Christmas miracle," Gogol said.
