A group of four diners got so appalled at being charged £1,004 (Dh5,181) for four steaks, fried fish and mineral water, that they summoned the police to complain about it.
The diners - comprising Japanese students who happened to be visiting Venice - were handed the bill at the Osteria da Luca restaurant located near the St Mark's Square in Venice, a Mirror report says.
It is not known if the group of students paid the bill or denied doing so. Luigi Brugnaro, the Mayor of Venice, has promised to look into the complaint.
However, the owner of the restaurant conveyed that he did not remember having any problem with the Japanese diners.
In a similar incident some time back, a British tourist and his parents had been duped into paying a bill of £463 (Dh2,389) at an Italian restaurant by the name of Trattoria Casanova in Venice.
