In bid to make sure parents collect children on time, a school in Kent, England, is issuing a fine of £1 per pupil for every five minutes of being late.
Holy Trinity in Gravesend said they will give three warnings to parents, following which they will be charged £1 every five minutes per child, reported BBC. Not only this, the school will contact social services if a child remains uncollected 20 minutes after the school finished at 3:30 pm.
This meant that after 3:40 pm, parents will be fined every five minutes of being late until 4:00 pm, after which social services will be contacted.
The school announced the policy earlier this month, stating that being late to collect children means paying staff overtime to care for uncollected children. This became unsustainable and is likely to impact other aspects of school funding.
Head teacher, Denise Gibbs-Naguar, said it was increasingly common for a "significant number" of pupils to remain uncollected 30 minutes after the school finished at 3:30 pm. She added that this meant pupils often "exhibit signs of anxiety and distress" and "worry that something may have happened".
The school's new policy has received mixed views from parents.
