Former Sindh health minister and a prominent leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Monday declared his support former Karachi mayor and party dissident Mustafa Kamal and leaving the party after 28 years of association.
"I have come here today to join Mustafa and Anis Qaimkhani for the sake of building a developed and progressive Pakistan," Dr Sagheer Ahmed said while addressing the media in Karachi with Kamal and Qaimkhani flanking him.
Sagheer endorsed the allegation of MQM chief Altaf Hussain's links with India's spy agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), and using Mohajir card alienating Urdu-speaking community from mainstream of national life.
He referred to the 'fickle-minded' policies of Altaf and the way workers have been driven to violence aimlessly. He repeated Kamal's question as to what is the direction and objective of the party. He said the workers rendered sacrifices but were forgotten by the leadership. In August 2014, the MQM Rabita Committee removed Dr Sagheer Ahmed from the panel. The party had at the time said that he was relieved of his duties to give him more time to address the health issues of the province.
"I have seen this city being destroyed. Kamal and Qaimkhani have provided me with an opportunity to stand up for a change," Dr Sagheer added.
"I think I need to play a clear and constructive role as a Karachiite and a dweller of this city, he further said. "I couldn't hold myself back from joining these two people. They have spoken the hearts of the people. I have never been in contact with any of them since they left the party," the former Sindh health minister said.
"If anyone asks who made Mustafa Kamal a minister or mayor I ask them who made you," he said alluding to MQM claims that Altaf Hussain made Mustafa Kamal mayor of Karachi. "I stopped calling him bhai because there is no bhai relationship now," Kamal said answering a question.
"We gave everything to the party but what did we get in return? Morphine injections, alcohol addiction and lewd speeches?" he questioned.
Dr Sagheer went on to say, "I have always disagreed with the exploitation of common workers of the party. I could not continue to see exploitation of workers and violence with the community."
"Today everyone knows about Altaf's links with RAW. I don't want to say anything to any MQM member but I request Altaf to stop having innocent people killed," he continued.
