Islamabad — An anti-terrorism court in Karachi on Saturday remanded an assistant director of Karachi Municipal Corporation Atif Ahmed to the custody of Rangers for 90 days.
Atif Ahmed is accused of being involved in scores of illegal allotments of valuable land and sending Rs17 billion to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s secretariat in London.
In a related case, Rangers informed an anti-terrorism court about the 90-day preventive detention of nine MQM workers for questioning.
Rangers personnel produced Zubair Ashraf, Adnan Ashraf, Fayyaz, Hasan Abbas, Imtiaz, Nisar Alam, Hamid, Shakir Raza and Ismail in the chamber of the judge in charge of the ATC-II, Anandram Sairani, amid tight security.
The Rangers law officer informed the court that the suspects were picked up within the jurisdiction of the Rizvia Society police station upon receiving credible information about their alleged involvement in extorting money, targeted killing and other offences that came within the ambit of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), 1997.
Meanwhile, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Rabita Committee has slammed the arrests as witch-hunt of its workers to prevent the party’s welfare outfit from serving the people.
MQM leader Kunwar Khalid Jamil said the Karachi operation is targeting only and only the MQM. Donations were collected for the Khidmat-i-Khalq Foundation, the charity wing of the party.
Meanwhile, the paramilitary force also produced two other suspects before another anti-terrorism court and informed it about their three-month detention.
The Rangers said that Sanaullah and Fawad-ul-Haq were picked up at the Defence area for their alleged involvement in extorting money and Fitra from traders and other terrorism-related activities.
