An Iraqi court sentenced Aziz on Tuesday to death by hanging, for crimes committed against members of the Shiite Dawa Party, of which current Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is a member.

Karolos Papoulias asked the Iraqi President Jalal Talabani to intervene and “demonstrate the difference between the current democratic (Iraq) and the country’s past.”

Aziz, a 74-year-old Christian who became the international face of Saddam’s regime, can appeal the sentence.

Saddam Hussein was hanged in 2006.
