Following an agreement reached between the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the government last week, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif issued a notification on Friday for setting up a Grievance Redressal Committee (GRC).
"The prime minister has been pleased to constitute a GRC to redress the grievances of MQM and other political party/person/entity regarding the alleged abuse of power or excess of authority, if any, by a law enforcement agency or any other government institution," said the ministry of law and justice's notification.
MQM senior leader Dr Farooq Sattar expressed satisfaction over the notification which paves the way for withdrawal of resignations by MQM lawmakers starting from Tuesday, he said.
The GRC, according to the notification released by the office of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, comprises Justice (Retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid, Justice (Retd) Khalil-ur-Rehman Khan, Justice (Retd) Ajmal Mian and Barrister Farogh Nasim. The interior secretary, as ex-officio, will work as its convener.
Justice Zahid and Barrister Nasim will represent the MQM in the committee and Justice Ajmal Mian and Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman the government.
According to the notification, the GRC will adopt its own procedure and rules of business.
