It's indeed much easier said than done! It takes a lot of self-control, self-respect and maturity to stay calm and composed during an argument. Either at work or in your personal life,
The power of verbal argument is limited.
The unpalatable truth is, it's perceived in our modern society that the person who cannot control his words shows that he cannot control himself and is hence deemed unworthy of respect. The human tongue has the power to make or mar the relationship. Again, easier said than done. Controlling your rage takes a lot of maturity and endurance.
What can you do?
1. Never ever engage in a heated argument, no matter how tempting it is. Instead, quietly distance yourself. The power of verbal argument is limited. If provoked, mention the issue of concern as gracefully as possible and leave it at that. A sane, sophisticated human being will respect your approach. The ones who don't, you don't want to be associated with them in any way.
2. When the situation heats up, it's better to maintain a quiet-yet-powerful demeanour through speaking less. Being loquacious is not perceived as having the last word, but helpless and unsophisticated. A temporary cold shoulder is better than a disrespectful argument.
3. Dealing with hate, rudeness, inefficiency, or even unprofessional conduct can be tricky, but don't lose yourself or take on an approach that you will regret later. Gracefulness takes time to master; it can not be faked; it cannot have a binary image. The way you conduct yourself in an argument will also result in how the other person will approach a similar situation in the future. So you set the rules by the way you conduct yourself.
4. Try compassion. Sometimes, just considering the other person's situation and empathising can beautifully transform everything. You strengthen your relationship that way and win the other person's loyalty for life. Compassion has a beautiful magic quotient; it's like a honey nestle.
Till next week be calm and #beextraordinary
