Quite a few brave women I know personally, who have been diagnosed with various stages of breast cancer, have just the one thing to say: more than the body, the battle is in the mind. You cannot, at any stage, give up. And if there was one thing they could have a shot at all over again, it would be "awareness". To be better versed with stuff like self-checks, and annual medical examinations. For older generations of women, breast cancer was an aberration; it happened to people you didn't know really well, except for that, you know, maternal aunt. and it happened because she never had kids. Fortunately, these days, a lot of myths about breast cancer have been busted - and are being busted every day, with more and more research happening in the field. But, unfortunately, as chances of total recovery are increasing by leaps and bounds, chances of women getting breast cancer are going up as well. It's a lifestyle thing, a new way of the world. We ardently hope a no-holds-barred cure is on the horizon; the good news is that, already, treatments are so advanced, there's been a huge improvement in prognosis and outlook. In this issue of wknd., a breast cancer special to commemorate breast cancer awareness (October is Breast Cancer Awareness month), we speak to a few survivors, who feel that - thanks to their tryst with the dreaded C-word - life has acquired a new, better meaning. Hats off.
Guide has been a favourite - mostly because of the incredible music by SD Burman, and the incredible chemistry between Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman. One of the most evolved and offbeat romances from the Bollywood stable - and way ahead of its time - the cult film turned 50 this year (how cool is it that Sholay turned 40 too, and we featured the film a few weeks ago?). Get up to speed with some 'guided' filmi tidbits in our Bollywood column. You might just have to reach out for the DVD again!
If anyone were to ask me who I consider the greatest film director ever, I'd have to think very hard. Deliberate. But Woody Allen would definitely be up there in the shortlist. Intriguingly, the man who has been so much in the thick of cinematic grandeur, has had a fairly twisted personal life. Is it really anybody's business? Well, maybe a little bit, because what he's like in real life could well influence what he does in reel life. But then, he doesn't. Exploring the Woody Allen dichotomy. Closer home, a group of young people light up the lives of domestic workers with movie nights.
All this and much more. Enjoy reading wknd. and have a great weekend!
