A 47-year old woman was rescued by the Ajman Police after the mobile phone she kept for charging beside her bed while sleeping sparked a fire in her flat.
Details of the case that occurred on Monday around 7am were unveiled by Colonel Abdallah Ahmed Al Hamrani, Deputy Director of the Ajman Police, who noted that the Asian woman suffered suffocation after inhaling smoke that emitted from the burning charger. An officer who was on patrol in her residential area noticed smoke billowing from the flat located in the Lewara Area of Ajman.
"Police officials immediately rushed to the building and inquired with the watchman about the tenant and discovered an Asian woman resided there. The officials knocked on the door but the woman did not open the door, leading them to break the door open. The woman was offered first aid until the arrival of the ambulance. Firefighters controlled the blaze in a few minutes before it spread to other rooms in the flat," he said.
Colonel Al Hamrani urged members of society not to charge mobile phones close to the bed while sleeping as it can lead to catastrophic accidents. He also said the switches should be kept off while sleeping to avoid the overheating of chargers.
