An Emirati man, who has been convicted of sending abusive and insulting texts to his wife via WhatsApp, has appealed against his two-month jail sentence.
The Abu Dhabi Appeals Court heard that the woman had dragged her husband to court. In her complaint, the woman said that she had some misunderstandings with her husband and instead of talking to her to resolve the issues, she was surprised when the man sent her abusive and insulting messages.
The woman pointed out that her husband abused her several times and she tried to stop him but in vain. She then decided to file a complaint against the man.
Prosecutors charged the man with abusing his wife and violating online law.
The Criminal Court of First Instance had earlier sentenced him to two months in prison and a five-year suspended jail term.
The man challenged the sentence at the appeals court, denying the charges and stressing that he was wrongly convicted.
During the latest hearing, the defendant told the court that his wife made malicious accusations against him due to some family disputes.
He said they were still married, but his wife has filed for a divorce and she wants custody of their children.
The judge advised the couple to reconcile their differences and settle the case outside the court.
The trial was adjourned until September 15.
