A patient, who was left blind in one eye because of a mistake during an operation, has been awarded Dh200,000 in compensation.
The Abu Dhabi Court of First Instance ordered a medical centre in the Capital to pay the compensation in cash after it was found guilty of medical negligence.
The man had visited the centre seeking treatment for severe pain in his left eye, court records show. Doctors said he had some white fluid in his eye and recommended a surgery.
After undergoing the surgery, however, the man lost his vision in his left eye. He decided to file a complaint with health authorities, which found that there had been a medical error in the treatment provided to him, The doctors reportedly failed to take into account all necessary requirements before proceeding with the operation.
The patient filed a lawsuit against the centre, demanding Dh1 million in physical, moral and material damages.
He said that besides losing his vision, he suffered severe pain in the eye for more than six months after the surgery. This, he added, prevented him from performing his duties and routines.
The court ruled that the medical centre must pay him Dh200,000 in compensation, in addition to shouldering all legal expenses he incurred.
