Pakistani expats celebrated the 72nd Independence Day with patriotic zeal and fervour across the UAE on Tuesday.
Hundreds of residents gathered in the embassy in Abu Dhabi as Pakistan Ambassador to the UAE Moazzam Ahmad Khan unfurled the national flag. Discussions of Imran Khan, prime minister-in-waiting, filled the air and residents said to be eagerly looking forward to developments in 'Naya (new) Pakistan'.
In his address, the ambassador said the present transfer of power through a democratic process in Pakistan was another milestone in the country's journey to maturity, stability and strengthening of democratic institutions.
The ambassador lauded the role played by defence forces and security agencies to curb terrorism and extremism. "We have turned the corner in the fight against terrorism and are now in the process of taking it to its logical conclusion."
The ambassador thanked the UAE leadership for continuous support offered to Pakistan.
"Pakistan was the first country to accord diplomatic recognition to the UAE in 1971. No wonder, it was also the first foreign country visited by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as head of state."
He appreciated the role played by expats in the development of the UAE and their home country.
"We all should continue to work with same zeal. At 1.5 million, the UAE is home to one of the largest and most diverse diasporas of Pakistanis anywhere in the world," Moazzam noted.
"We are a nation of great resolve, resources and resilience. We must continue to tap into these strengths. Temporary setbacks and road bumps should not distract us from our higher objectives. We must remain firm in our convictions, and steadfast in our pursuit of development, peace and prosperity.
The future holds great promise for us," he added amid slogans of 'Pakistan Zindabad' and 'Imran Khan Zindabad'.
Later, as part of cultural programmes, students sang national songs and performed dances. Also, members of the Christian community sang 'Hum Ek Hain' (We are all one) to drive home point of unity.
