Two men who tried to steal five gold boxes from the UAE Central Bank using forged documents have been jailed for three years. The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance handed down the sentence to the Iranian men after finding them guilty of forgery and attempted theft.
Official court documents stated that three men went to the UAE Central Bank in Abu Dhabi and presented documents to an official claiming they had deposited five boxes of gold in the bank and that they wanted to take it.
The official told them to wait so he could verify their documents. And after finding out that they were forged, he informed security officers, who immediately arrested the men. Prosecutors charged the men with forging documents and attempting to steal gold from the central bank.
The men denied the charges throughout their trial.
Two of the men said in court that they received the documents from someone in Iran who sent them to obtain gold from the central bank on his behalf. The men said they had "no idea that the documents were forged".
The third man said he was just accompanying the duo to help them with translation because they neither knew Arabic nor English. He also said he was a resident of the UAE for 14 years and had never been involved in any crime.
The court convicted the two men based on the evidence presented by the prosecutors. The third person was cleared of the charges.
The duo will be deported after serving their jail sentences.
