According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred at 9.30am when a container from a truck fell on to a Dubai Transport Corporation taxi.

"The truck was trying to manoeuvre a turn from the signal when suddenly the container fell on the taxi crushing the driver and the passenger to death on the spot," said the eyewitness, adding that he heard a big noise and ran out of his building. “It was the worst thing I have ever seen in my life. There was big pool of blood on the road and the taxi was completely crushed," he said.

A source from Dubai Police confirmed the death, saying: "The bodies of both Mohammed Jamaluddin, the driver of the taxi, and the unidentified passenger, have been taken to the police morgue and the driver of the truck has been arrested."

The source added that police are investigating the cause of the accident.

According to a colleague, Hisham had joined Dubai Transport Corporation fleet of taxis as driver eight months ago. Earlier, he used to work in a restaurant, he said, adding that Hisham had recently returned on duty following a visit back home to see his newly-born twins. He pointed out that Hisham's taxi was taken for service and the poor man was driving a standby car to achieve the target and avoid a penalty by the corporation."
