With the help of a smart app, Fujairah was able to collect and sort 125,360kg of waste, the municipality has said.
Called 'Think Green', the application has been guiding residents on managing their household waste and boosting recycling habits. It was part of the Fujairah Municipality's smart services, winning an environment sustainability award last year.
Seventy-five staff members of the municipality, 24 schools, and several community members have participated in the initiative.
"Sorting out waste materials using smart applications is critical in improving the recycling and preservation of resources," said Mohamed Saif Al Afkham, director-general of the Fujairah Municipality.
The app's introduction was a major step in the emirate's waste management approach and towards its goal of raising awareness and going green, Al Afkham said.
Through the app, residents learn about how they can segregate their wastes for recycling. They also get information on where they can find the nearest bins and another feature allows them to request collection.
"The app helps facilitate the collection and treatment of waste; reduces costs involved in waste sorting; prevents unpleasant odours; keeps communities safe from pollutants. It also improves the quality of separated materials and, overall, reduces municipal wastes."
